B3.  ISOTOPES & RELATIVE ISOTOPIC MASSES - 2

 3.2  EXAMPLES OF THE 21 MONO-NUCLIDIC ELEMENTS

Only 21 elements are MONO-NUCLIDIC,

being low-Z examples.  Naturally occurring samples of mono-nuclidic elements consist of a single nuclide only that is, therefore, 100 % abundant.

ASIDE

The terms mono-nuclidic and mono-isotopic are distinct.  Mono-nuclidic elements are classed as those with only one significant naturally abundant nuclide.  On the other hand, the 26 mono-isotopic elements possess only a single stable nuclide.

There is some overlap between these categories: 19 elements are both mono-nuclidic and mono-isotopic.  However, seven mono-isotopic nuclides are not mono-nuclidic, and three mono-nuclidic elements are not mono-isotopic.
