C. AMOUNT OF SUBSTANCE & MOLAR MASS
C1. AMOUNT OF SUBSTANCE - MEANING OF THE TERMINOLOGY
In the sciences, particular significance is attached to words or terminology irrespective of whether they have familiar meaning, for example, terms like ‘mixture’, ’compound’ and ‘element’.
The everyday term ‘amount’ has a very special place and meaning in chemistry.
‘Amount’ is another fundamental physical quantity as are mass, length, time, etc. (see SI units)
It provides an alternative, and very useful, way of expressing how much there is of a substance.
How much there is of
a substance can be expressed as
a mass (by reference to a standard mass);
a volume (by reference to a standard volume);
or an amount (by reference to a standard amount).
Being a physical quantity, an amount is written as a number multiplied by a unit, as in the following examples.
It should be appreciated that the counting unit 'dozen' is not a recognized S.I. unit while the unit for amount of substance (mole) is, and so the latter's use must logically follow the stricter precepts of S.I.
