In the calculations tackled thus far, concentration has been encountered as a so-called amount concentration, expressed most frequently in units of  mol dm     or  mol / L.

Mass concentration is one of a number of alternative ways to consider concentration.  Rather than
amount of substance,
n, per unit volume of solution, V,  this physical quantity is defined as the
mass of substance,
m, per unit volume of solution, V.

It often takes the quantity symbol r or g (Greek, lower case rho or gamma) and it follows that

blood glucose levels measured as an amount concentration.  Mass concentration is an alternative designated in

milligram per decilitre, mg / dL.

These alternative units to measure mass concentration are a feature of this next exercise concerning an important anti-cancer drug that has been in use for a long time.
