When two elements are found in combination, the compound type existing depends on the elements involved.  Generally, where reactive metals are in combination with reactive non-metals then compounds with ionic bonding exist.  When two non-metals have combined, however, covalently bonded substances tend to be present.   The properties of substances are dictated to a large extent by the types of bonds they contain.
