 11.3  CALCULATING AN EMPIRICAL FORMULAE FROM MASSES OF CONSTITUENTS 

For a compound, analytical data might be presented as masses of constituent elements rather than mass % compositions.  In such cases we do not have to decide on a basis for the calculation as normally a sample mass will be provided or a total implied.

These problems solve with the same routine as those tackled in section 11.2 above.

WORKED EXAMPLE 11

5.00 g of a gaseous hydrocarbon on analysis was found to contain 4.00 g of carbon.  Calculate its empirical formula.

[ Ar(H) = 1.01;  Ar(C) = 12.01 ]
